The Jesuits’ Church Foundation is holding a lecture on International Women’s Day exploring the intricate relationship between women and popular culture from a sociological lens.

Valerie Visanich, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Malta, will deliver the talk.

Key themes that will be tackled include how media representations and cultural narratives shape and are shaped by societal perceptions of gender. It will investigate how these representations influence women’s identities, social roles and societal expectations, as well as how women actively engage with and contest cultural norms.

The aim of the discussion is to contribute to ongoing discussions about gender in/equality, media literacy and the transformative potential of inclusive and empowering cultural production.

The one-hour lecture, titled ‘Reframing the Gaze: Women’s Representation and Contestations in Popular Culture’, will be held at the Oratory of the Onorati (access from Archbishop Street), Valletta, at 5pm.

Entrance is free but donations are welcome.
