The Għaqda tal-Malti – Università is organising another edition of Żanżan Kelma – the national spelling bee for children.
The competition will be divided into three categories:
- Category A: For children aged between 8 and 9 (Year 3-Year 4 in school)
- Category B: For those aged 9 to 10 (Year 5-Year 6)
- Category C: For 11- to 13-year-olds (Year 7-Year 9)
Three preparatory sessions are being held in summer. These sessions aim to help children improve their Maltese spelling skills before the semifinals and finals, which are scheduled for October.
These sessions will take place in different locations across Malta and Gozo. Ideally, the young participants attend all three sessions in the same location.
Attending these sessions is, however, not required in order to participate in the semifinals and finals.
One may fill out this form to register their children for the semifinals and finals, and to express interest in the summer sessions. Once everything is confirmed, one will receive an e-mail with all the relevant information for the three sessions.
The semifinals will take place on October 18 between 5 and 7pm at Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, Santa Venera. The finals will be held on the evening of October 19. The time and venue will be confirmed at a later date.
Participants and winners from previous years are welcome to take part again. Participants will not be given a list of words to study beforehand.
Parents are asked to inform the organisers if the participant has any speech or other impairments for the necessary arrangements to be made.
More details about the event can be found on Facebook.
Żanżan Kelma is an ancillary activity for the European Day of Languages in Malta.
