Malta’s climate is both a blessing and a curse for pets. On the one hand, the great outdoors beckons – on the other, hot tarmac and paws don’t go so well together. There’s no need to curb your doggo’s exercise during the hottest months of the year. You just need to rethink things a tiny bit.
Although the beach may be the first place that comes to mind, most of Malta’s beaches are sadly not pet-friendly. Luckily, there are many other ways to keep your pets cool, comfortable and happy in the warmer weather. Here are four ways to enjoy the summer with your pets.
Take a stroll in the shade
Why not take your pet for a walk through some of Malta’s lush gardens and parks? Places like San Anton Gardens in Attard and the Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana offer a cool, shaded oasis from the heat. These places perfect for leisurely strolls, allowing both you and your pets to enjoy the fresh air and nature without overheating. Just remember to keep them on the leash and pick up behind you.
Pet-friendly al fresco dining
As the temperature rises, so does the mood for outdoor dining. Luckily, Malta boasts plenty of pet-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating areas. Treat yourself and your furry friend to a a chill time on the Sliema or Msida waterfront. Most places will be happy to provide your pet with water and a comfy place to rest.
Early morning and evening edventures
Make the most of Malta’s cooler hours by adjusting your pet’s exercise schedule. Plan your walks or play sessions for early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the peak heat.
Invest in cooling accessories
Help your pets beat the heat with some locally-sourced cooling accessories. Visit pet shops for cooling mats, vests, and other products designed to keep your pets comfortable during the warmer months. These accessories can make a significant difference in your pet’s wellbeing, especially when coupled with a shaded resting spot and plenty of water.
Our last tip? Buy a collapsible water bowl, and a water spray to make sure your best friend stays feeling fresh. And do we really need to add it – pick up that poop!
