We’re heading back to Downton!

Out on September 12, 2025, Downton Abbey 3 will see many familiar faces back at Downton Abbey, the fictional Earl of Grantham’s estate.

Just over two years since the release of the second Downton Abbey film, the show’s official Instagram channel delighted fans with a post confirming that the third movie had started filming!

So far having the working title of “Downton Abbey 3”, the plotline is still completely underwraps. Rumours are flying around aplenty, though, and the most believable seem to hint that the third movie will be set during World War II. Some, however, are speculating that the film will follow the events of Downton Abbey: A New Era, in which—Spoiler Alert!—we left the characters mourning the death of Lady Violet in the late 1920s, while a seventh season will take us into the events of the Second World War.

Whatever happens, many of the familiar faces we know and love, both from upstairs and below stairs, will be reprising their roles. These include Hugh Bonneville (the Earl of Grantham), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith), and Joanne Froggatt (Anna), among others. The script has once again been written by Julian Fellowes, the creator of the series, and Simon Curtis, who directed the second film, will once again be taking up the role.

Downton Abbey first aired on ITV in 2011, spawning six seasons and two feature films. The story is set in the early 1900s, and follows the lives of the Crawley Family, whose patriarch is the 7th Earl of Grantham, and their servants. Kicking off just before the sinking of the Titanic, it’s now made it all the way to the age of the flappers in 1929.
