Here’s why cucumbers have gone viral

TikTokers have taken the fruit to new, viral heights, even referring to them as ‘a lifestyle’.

TikTok has made many things—ranging from the mundane to the weird—go viral over the past couple of years. There’s been the Gorilla Glue girl, who thought using glue instead of hair gel was a good idea; DIY vampire fangs; plenty of nail trends; and even eating a corn on the cob using a driller (don’t do it). One thing we never thought would go viral, though, is the humble cucumber.

The trend began with a TikToker called Logan, who has garnered millions of followers thanks to his recipes that feature cucumbers, which are botanically fruit not vegetables. Such is his love for them, that he’s even gone as far as saying that ‘cucumbers are a lifestyle’. Now, as the term “viral cucumber salad” even trends on Google, it’s time to go back to basics and look at the key benefits of eating this fruit.

#1. They’re great for hydration: Cucumbers are 96% water, meaning that they are the perfect food to help you stay hydrated in the summer. This, coupled with drinking enough water, will ensure better-looking skin and a better-functioning body.

#2. They’re bursting with antioxidants: Like many fruits, the cucumber is rich in antioxidants, especially flavonoids and tannins. These two compounds help block free radicals in our bodies, potentially staving off numerous chronic illnesses.

#3. They’re very low on calories: Although nutrient-rich, cucumbers are especially low in calories: 300 grams amounts to just 45 calories! In other words, you can eat cucumber till the cows come home, without having to worry about weight gain.
