3 surprising benefits of eating tofu

Tofu is one of those foods we all know of but very few of us tend to eat, especially on a daily basis. Even so, there are many reasons to increase your intake of this soya-based, meat and dairy alternative.

But let’s start from the basics: what is tofu? The answer is pretty simple: it’s soy milk that is cooked until it curds. It can come in a variety of textures, too, including silken, soft, and firm. And because it’s made entirely from plant-based ingredients, it’s good for both vegetarians and vegans.

Most importantly, though, in moderation, tofu is great for everyone, especially because:

It’s packed full of protein: Soya products contain all nine essential amino acids that help with growth and immunity, among others. Moreover, it is extremely easy for our bodies to digest it, which is a huge plus.

It’s packed with Isoflavones: These crystalline compounds that are derived from plants have been linked to reduced cholesterol levels. Since soya, and therefore tofu, have loads of this compound, eating tofu may actually help reduce cholesterol.

It’s made with legumes: Soya is a legume and legumes are a rich source of both fibre and phytochemicals. The latter are antioxidants found naturally in plants and are known to help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Of course, many other benefits have been attributed to tofu—or at least suggested as possible benefits—including supporting bone health, lifting mood, and alleviating peri-menopausal symptoms. Needless to say, no one food can stave off every ailment, but eating more good stuff certainly helps! So next time you’re at the supermarket, why not consider buying some tofu?
