The Big Shave Off on June 14 is a one-of-a-kind charity comedy event featuring a hilarious lineup of comedians playing wild comedy games, and the main event: Steve Hili, Malta’s biggest comedy export, shaving off his trademark dreadlocks.
Steve Hili is the only ever Maltese act to do a one-hour solo show in London’s West End, and to perform at the Comedy Store in Sydney. Critically acclaimed in the UK – described as “Sterling Work” in The Guardian; “Hilarious and eye-opening by VoiceMag and “High energy, high Impact and not afraid to go for the jugular “ in the Melbourne Observer – Hili is known for his energetic in-your-face comedy. And, up till now, for his dreads. But that last bit is about to change.
But the evening is not just about the jokes and the jaw-dropping new haircut. The Big Shave Off is raising funds to support Kellimni.com, operated by SOS Malta which is an organisation doing crucial work in the mental health space amongst other sectors.
Kellimni.com offers free, professional individual counselling services and group therapeutic sessions, online mental health support services, as well as running awareness campaigns aimed at breaking the stigma around mental health.
“Let’s laugh. Let’s raise money. Let’s get talking.”
Steve says: “Mental health is something I’m deeply passionate about – especially when it comes to getting men to open up. We need to talk more! And we all need laugh more too. This event is about doing both. If losing my hair helps open more counselling slots and get people talking, then bring on the baldness!”
But will he really shave it all off?
“I might leave a few of dreads right at the back, just as little souvenirs. And also because I still have warped ideas of what looking cool means. But apart from that… it is going!”
Graziella Schiavone from SOS Malta adds: “This is a fantastic initiative! We need to get people talking openly about mental health. No one should feel ashamed to seek support, regardless of age, gender, or background. Help is out there, and trained professionals are ready to listen and support you. Events like this break the stigma and remind us that healing can start with a simple conversation — and even with a laugh.”
Whether you’re coming for the comedy, the cause, or just to see what Steve’s scalp actually looks like – it’s going to be a night to remember. The accompanying acts performing on the night are James Ryder, Ed Vassallo, Dan Xuereb, Paige Possanza, and Colin Fitz!
And here’s the best part: every single one is performing for free, donating their time and talent to help make a difference.
This event is also being proudly supported by Mediacoop and Maritime MT, whose generosity is helping turn this night of mayhem into meaningful change, with PR support by Finesse Group.
