Destaged Dance is presenting a compelling triple bill of contemporary dance in Gozo on October 24 and 25.
Created and directed by Deborah Agius, the show promises an immersive and intimate experience.
The title, Plight, serves as a thematic anchor, subtly connecting the three distinct works, each of which explores challenging and difficult situations while offering a deeply personal insight into the artist’s own journey.
The works being performed are:
• Ara naqra: A captivating dance installation, which explores a common social practice. The dancers are confined to their space, while the audience surrounds them and even share some of their space.
• The Mother in Me: A poignant contemporary dance interpretation of Maleficent’s story, inspired by Serena Valentino’s book Mistress of Evil. This work delves into the complexities of Maleficent’s past and how this leads to the destructive relationship she has with her own daughter, Aurora, and ultimately her own demise.
• The Day You Were Not: A deeply moving dance journey through the stages of grief, offering a powerful and emotional experience.
These works were created over a 10-year period, representing a significant progression and growth in Agius’s life. The audience will witness a journey of emotional maturity and artistic evolution unfolding on stage.

Through these thought-provoking performances, Destaged Dance aims to create a closer bond between the audience and the dancers, fostering a richer appreciation for the art form. The project also encourages dynamic collaborations between local and foreign artists.
Plight will open its doors on October 24 at the new Sir Arturo Mercieca Primary School Hall in Victoria, with a repeat performance on October 25. Both shows start at 8pm.
Tickets are free but booking on destageddance@gmail.com is necessary.
The performance is sponsored by The Cultural Heritage Directorate within The Ministry for Gozo and Planning, and supported by The Gozo College and Aurora Opera Theatre.
