Karta Festa 2026, an initiative by the Esplora Interactive Science Centre, was launched this week.
Inspired by the art and techniques of carnival floats, the third edition of the festival offers a dynamic programme featuring live science shows, creative workshops and interactive drop-in activities for all ages.
Highlights include a science show exploring water conservation and the water cycle; hands-on workshops focused on recycling, textiles and sustainable materials; storytelling sessions for younger children introducing environmental and marine themes; as well as creative ‘Science on the Spot’ activities where visitors contribute to the design, construction and restoration of carnival-inspired elements.
In his address at the launch, held at a carnival workshop in Marsa, Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted how the programme brings together science, sustainability and Malta’s cultural heritage through practical and accessible experiences for the public.
He added that Karta Festa reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to investing in scientific education, creativity and innovation as key pillars for the future of our country.
Esplora’s deputy director, Kiki Mizzi, emphasised the programme’s artistic core.
“Carnival is a celebration of imagination, colour and craftsmanship. Through Karta Festa, we are placing art at the heart of learning and encouraging participants to explore design, form and creativity while discovering how artistic processes intersect with science,” she said.
Karta Festa 2026 will be held at the Esplora Interactive Science Centre between February 14 and 17. More details about the programme and booking information will be announced closer to the event.
