The National Agency for Performing Arts (NAPA), under the direction of Dominic Galea, is organising a weekend of music at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta.

On April 24, NAPA will pay tribute to Malta’s rich musical heritage by celebrating the works of Pawlu Grech, a musician and visual artist of international calibre. The evening will see two former students of Grech,  pianists Ramona Zammit Formosa and Tricia Dawn Williams, perform his work.

The same evening titled Pawlu Grech: A Cosmos of Art, under the curation of Nikki Petroni, will also include the launch of an exhibition of Grech’s paintings in the chapel of the same venue, together with a publication produced as part of this same project with an in-depth study of Grech’s work.

Grech explored both visual and musical languages, creating pieces that challenged traditional principles in both art forms. In his musical capacity, Grech mentored several musicians who played an important role in shaping generations of local talent, including NAPA’s own CEO Galea.

On April 25 and 26, the focus shifts from classical/contemporary music to jazz, as local jazz trio Sfera, led by Paul Giordimaina, launches its second, much-awaited album Night Walk.

The trio is composed of Giordimaina on piano, who composes all of Sfera’s pieces, Oliver Degabriele on double bass and Ġuzè Camilleri on drums.

The band was formed right as the COVID-19 restrictions were easing, and musicians started to get together again to make music.

Sfera launched its first album Gatt Groove in 2024, dedicated to the memory of Charles Gatt known as ‘is-City’, who had recently passed and was a great friend and musical influence on all the three musicians.

The second album has been in the works since last year and will be released on vinyl.

The evenings dedicated to this launch will kick off with a performance of the album, followed by a small reception and signing of the vinyl release in the courtyard of Palazzo de la Salle.

Through its music programme, NAPA continues to provide an important platform and support structure for Maltese musicians and composers to develop their craft and share their work with wider audiences.
