Sovereign Art Foundation announces Students Prize winners

The annual competition highlights the creativity and talent of students across Malta and Gozo

Sovereign Trust (Malta) Limited, part of the international Sovereign Group, together with the Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), has announced the winners of the ninth edition of the Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize – Malta & Gozo.

The annual competition highlights the creativity and talent of students across Malta and Gozo, encouraging artistic expression and recognising the work of young artists.

This year’s Judges Prize was awarded to Danielle Nevaeh Jimenez for Skate Static, representing G. F. Abela Junior College. The prize was presented by judge Laura Swale. The student received €500, while the school was awarded €1,500.

Nicole Calvagna representing St Francis Secondary School, Sliema, won the Public Vote Prize for The Forsaken. The prize was presented by judge Caroline Miggiani. The student received €300 and the school €800.

A global charitable mission

This year also marked another successful collaboration with Arts Council Malta. The Arts Council Malta Prize for Education and Training was awarded to Christina Sciberras for What Time Leaves Behind, representing St Martin’s Institute of Higher Education. The prize was presented by Nikki Petroni.

Founded in 2003 by Howard Bilton, the Sovereign Art Foundation is a charitable organisation that supports contemporary art and uses creative programmes to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds. To date, its initiatives have raised over $15 million worldwide.

What Time Leaves Behind by Christina Sciberras

The Students Prize now takes place in a number of countries, including Hong Kong, Guernsey, Bahrain, Singapore, Mauritius, Portugal, the Isle of Man, Malta and Gozo, Gibraltar, London, Chester and Cyprus.

Stephen Griffiths, managing director of Sovereign Trust (Malta) Ltd, said the initiative continues to grow locally and remains an important platform for young artists.
