Animated series ‘Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel’ returns for second season

New series to launch on One on Monday, June 8
The series brings to life the stories of a young boy named Karamellu, growing up in 1950s Żejtun.

Nannu Karm Productions and Toontuloon Animation Studio are releasing the second season of Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel, with the first episode airing on One on Monday, June 8, at 4.45pm. Repeats will be shown throughout the week.

The animated series continues to take viewers on a nostalgic journey into Maltese life during the 1950s, bringing to life the fondest memories of a young boy named Karamellu, while celebrating the universal themes of family and friendship.

Written by Charles Buttigieg (In-Nannu Karm), the series is inspired by experiences the author lived through during his childhood, when children could still play freely in the streets because there were very few cars.

“Karamellu, as such, never existed,” Buttigieg said. “It is a name I thought up myself. However, as a child, Karamellu represents me; what I experienced and encountered during my primary school years. I called him Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel because I was born in Żejtun, which has two parts – the Upper Village and the Lower Village, with the parish church situated between them. Karamellu’s stories are often inspired by personal occurrences or by people I knew during my childhood. I built upon their personalities, as I knew them and appreciated them.”

The first series won the Intellectual Property Award for Creative Initiative in 2025, organised by the Department of Commerce.

The project is supported by the Arts Council Malta and sponsored by the Centre for the Maltese Language (ĊIM), Melita Foundation, Strand Palace Agencies (Sizzzlers & Twistees), Erremme Business Advisors, Country Terrace Restaurant (Gozo), Tristar Travel, Book Distributors Ltd (BDL), and District 5 Restaurant (Birżebbuġa).

One can follow Karamellu tar-Raħal t’Isfel on its dedicated Facebook page and on nannukarm.org.
