Sarah Bonnici will premiere her debut visual album something i had to lose as a fully realised visual album at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta on June 29.
The event will feature a full screening of the visual album, offering audiences an immersive cinematic experience that brings the record to life through music, film and narrative storytelling.
The visual album unfolds as a continuous story, with each song presented in sequence to narrate Bonnici’s journey of growth and artistic rediscovery.
The experience is further enriched with original musical interludes written by the singer, alongside a voice-over script that supports and deepens the storyline between songs.
Reflecting the album’s deeply personal nature, something i had to lose continues Bonnici’s return to her roots in soul and jazz, reinterpreting these influences through a contemporary visual and musical lens.
“This album was already the most personal thing I’ve ever created, but bringing it to life visually has allowed me to express parts of the story that music alone couldn’t fully capture. The Manoel felt like the only place that could hold this experience in the way it deserves,” she said.
The project is creatively directed by Steven Levi Vella, with cinematography by DOP Victor Abela. The music is fully written by Bonnici and produced by Edward Abela and Matthew James Borg.
The premiere on 29 June marks the first public unveiling of the visual album and a key moment in Bonnici’s evolving artistic journey.
something i had to lose will be officially released after the premiere.
