Following a transformative year, both personally and creatively, Sarah Bonnici has announced the release of her debut visual album, Something I Had to Lose, which is expected to come out on June 29.

Fully written by Sarah, alongside her two producers, Matthew James Borg and Edward Abela, this visual album takes listeners and viewers on an intimate journey through the experiences and emotions that have shaped her life over the past year. Each song within the album serves as a chapter in a story of growth and self-discovery. Original musical interludes written by Sarah, alongside a voice-over passage connect the tracks and deepen the narrative, creating a cohesive story.

Most of the instruments throughout the album were recorded live, with Sarah choosing to leave the lead vocals largely untouched and unedited to preserve the raw emotion of each performance.

Something I Had to Lose is the most honest version of myself I’ve ever shared,” Sarah says. “For years, I found myself creating music that I believed would resonate with the widest audience, often losing sight of who I was as an artist. This album became a healing journey that helped me reconnect with myself and embrace the music that feels most natural to me.”

While audiences around the world have come to know Sarah through her pop releases, the album sees her return to the soul and jazz genres that first shaped her as a musician.

“These are the sounds I grew up singing,” she explains. “They’re the styles that made me fall in love with music in the first place. For a long time, I was afraid to fully embrace them because I felt they weren’t what people wanted to hear. This album is about letting go of that fear and finally creating music that speaks directly to my soul.”

Sarah rose to international attention following her Eurovision entry, Loop, in 2024. Trained in voice, dance and piano from a young age, she has performed across Europe and the Middle East, including Italy, Spain, Germany, Dubai and the UK.

Following Eurovision, Sarah released multiple chart-topping singles and performed twice at Isle of MTV. She served as a coach on The Voice Kids Malta and was also a songwriter behind Malta’s 2026 Eurovision entry, Bella.
