The Theft of the Caravaggio, the feature directorial debut from Maltese film-maker Joshua Cassar Gaspar, will be released across North America on Apple TV, Amazon and other major digital platforms following its acquisition by a US distributor.
The film, which had its world premiere in competition at the Mediterrane Film Festival last year, follows Orpheus, a cathedral caretaker who awakens to discover that a priceless Caravaggio masterpiece has vanished while under his watch.
Shot on 35mm film in Malta, The Theft of the Caravaggio stars Maltese talent including Paul Kissaun, Elektra Anastasi, Peter Galea and Narcy Calamatta, alongside British actor Robert Grose.
Produced by Valletta Pictures, the film’s key creative team includes producing partner Alon Michael Hattingh, co-producers Michael Kissaun and Jameson Cucciardi, cinematographer Daniel Cawthorne and composer Elton Zarb.
Since its debut, the film has screened at a number of international festivals and industry events, including the Toronto International Film Festival Industry programme, the Art Film Festival, the European Film Festival in Abu Dhabi, and the inaugural European Film Festival in Ras Al Khaimah, where it was selected as the festival’s opening film.
The Theft of the Caravaggio will also screen at the Wyoming International Film Festival in Cheyenne, the US, and the Lavazza IncluCity Film Festival in Toronto as it concludes its festival run.
Following its North American release, the film will move into distribution across European territories.
