5 baby steps for a greener lifestyle

A more sustainable lifestyle starts with small decisions
Don’t bin those leftovers, the planet will thank you.

Going green has become a household topic in the last few years. We all know about recycling and the new 10c rule on plastic bottles in Malta and Gozo. While I’m sure you’re up to your nose in hypocritical junk mail telling you to recycle and to take the black bag out on the right day, there’s plenty you can include in your daily routine to live a greener lifestyle.

1 – Fill the washing machine

As tempting as it may be to wash those beach towels and nothing else, opting for a greener lifestyle means waiting. Why waste all those litres of water on two towels when you can add in some more and get more done in the same load?

2 – Get creative with leftovers

So, you’ve got some leftover chicken and veg? Stuff it all into a pie and eat it for dinner the next day. Not enough for a pie? Use a wrap. Use your imagination and you’ll be amazed at how much less food you throw out.

3 – Ditch the printer

Keep important documents on your phone, or better still, email them to yourself. Don’t print out an entire file of tickets when you’re travelling – just charge your phone beforehand and you’ll be doing your part to save the trees.

4 – Shop local

Besides supporting local businesses, shopping local means less carbon dioxide in the air as there are no planes or vans involved in your product reaching you. Organic farming also means fresher food – it’s a win-win!

5 – Use your curtains

Reduce the time you have the air conditioner or heater on by closing the curtains or blinds before leaving the house. This trick keeps the house cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
