Two Maltese students, Neil Schembri (15 years old) and Hailey Schembri (14) from Qrendi, represented Malta in the 2022-23 Guangdong Youth Link Painting and Calligraphy Competition, placing third.

Out of 2,000 painting and calligraphy works, 60 students placed first, 92 students placed second, 150 students placed third, 297 students received an award of excellence and 465 students received an award of encouragement.

The painting submitted by the Maltese students symbolises the friendship between Malta and China and uses both Maltese and Chinese motifs, including the Chinese ‘sampan’ boat and the Maltese ‘luzzu’ boat.

Their winning painting was also published in the official almanac of the 2022-23 Guangdong Youth Link Painting and Calligraphy Competition, which includes all the winning paintings and calligraphy of the participating countries.

Neil said: “It is always an honour representing Malta in the Guangdong Youth Link Painting Competition as we are contributing to the friendship between Malta and China.”

In 2021, the GD Youth Link awarded Neil and Hailey with the regional prize.
