Head back to the early noughties with Cherry Coke hair

One of this summer’s biggest hair trends is a TikTok nod to the 1990s and early 2000s.

Meghan Thee Stallion, Dove Cameron, Sophie Turner, Marsai Martin, and Zendaya have all boarded the Cherry Coke (or Cherry Cola, depending on who you ask) hair trend train this summer. And we are absolutely obsessed with how good it looks!

The vibrant and richly deep, red-purple hue has become all the rage following its discovery by many TikTokers across the world. Yet the colour is nothing new, with Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland and actress Jessica Alba both being the faces (or should we say the heads?) of the trend in the Y2K era. Oh, and Rihanna rocked it in the mid-2010s like no one’s business.

What we particularly love about this hair trend is that it’s incredibly inclusive: it looks great on light, medium, and darker skin tones, and works well with straight, wavy, or curly hair. The vibrant burgundy hair colour also works with different styles, and videos and images of the trend on the internet show women rocking everything from varsity jackets and jeans to evening gowns, to LBDs, to everyday wear while sporting a head of Cherry Coke-coloured hair.

Malta’s very own hair queen has also showcased her transformation into a Cherry Coke goddess – twice! In one instance, she went for the classic Cherry Coke look with rich reddish colour; while, in an another instance, she opted for a more purple-y hue. Both look fabulous.

Our advice for anyone looking to recreate this early-noughties beauty trend is to speak to your hairstylist about the best shade for your skin tone, and to use hair products that can lock your colour in.
