So celebs are now going trouserless

But we’re not quite convinced this look will grow legs in Malta.

It started on the catwalks, with the likes of Miu Miu, Ferragamo, Prada, and Christian Dior all sending trouserless looks down the runway for their Fall 2023 collections. Then, it was taken up by media heavyweights like Taylor Swift, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Gisele Bündchen, and Bella Hadid, ensuring maximum visibility for what has been dubbed the ‘pantless trend’.

The looks sported by these celebrities have ranged from wearing micro shorts that just about cover the bum, to layering multiple underpants-like garments on top of each other (Kylie Jenner even wore what look like men’s Y-fronts). Even more fabulouslously, many of the early adopters of the trend have also worn tights with the look, sometimes placing the waistline on top of all their upper garments.

A likely explanation at to why all this is happening comes from The Fashion Times, where writer Cordelia Tai writes that ‘in a world where hemlines have no upper limits … and visible undergarments and freed nipples are part of our quotidian existence, it is a logical progression.”

While this trend is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, we have to admit that we love some of the looks celebrities have come up with. Hailey Bieber’s look, for example, combined black underpants-style bottoms, black tights, black stilettos, a black, floorlength leather coat, and a high-neck cream top – and it absolutely screamed high fashion.

Where this trend will go and whether it will be picked up by non-celebs is, of course, still to be seen, but it should give you a bit of context if you see someone going trouserless down Republic Street or at Tigné Point. For our money, given that this trend is getting so many column inches on fashion magazines, it’s just a matter of time!
