Amy Pizzuto, a student at St Joseph School Sliema, and Ryan Vella, who attends De La Salle College, were among Europe’s brightest young financial minds who competed in the European Money Quiz 2024 finals that were hosted by the European Banking Federation (EBF).
The two students, whose trip was sponsored by the Malta Bankers’ Association (MBA), represented Malta as they joined other national delegations of teenagers aged 13-15 − champions from their respective countries − who convened to Brussels for a chance to win the prestigious European trophy.
Amy and Ryan finished in fourth place, narrowly missing third by just a few points, achieving the highest ranking ever registered by the Maltese competitors over the four years that Maltese students have participated in the European Money Quiz.
Amy and Ryan were named Malta’s representatives after winning a national quiz that was organised and supported by the MBA as part of European Money Week, in collaboration with the Department of Accounting and Business Studies within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes of the Ministry for Education Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation.
MBA’s secretary general, Karol Gabarretta, said: “Our national competition garnered noteworthy participation, highlighting the increasing focus on financial education across Malta and Europe. Amy and Ryan truly made us proud at the European Money Quiz, demonstrating the enthusiasm of our youth to learn and acquire financial skills. It is truly uplifting for the Malta Bankers’ Association to witness such initiatives bearing fruit. “
This year’s European Money Quiz saw a record-breaking turnout in several countries, with approximately 36,000 teenagers from 2,200 schools participating in national rounds across Europe. The initiative, launched by the EBF in 2017, aims to empower young people with essential financial knowledge and foster a financially responsible generation.
