Merging nature with art

San Anton School unveils sculpture installations inspired by neighbouring valley
The installation at the school’s entrance reinterprets a prickly pear tree.

San Anton School has inaugurated two outdoor sculpture installations, enhancing the school’s entrance and outdoor areas with vibrant colours and artistic interest.

The project, a collaborative effort led by the school’s art teaching team and renowned sculptor Stephan Priehyba, draws inspiration from the rich flora and fauna of the neighbouring Imselliet Valley, merging nature with art.

The initiative provided students with an immersive, hands-on learning experience, where they sketched and designed the sculptures, bringing their creative visions to life. The ceramic masterpieces were fired at a local pottery firm and expertly assembled by Priehyba into stunning large-scale installations.

A highlight of the project is the striking sculpture located by the school gates, which features an artistic interpretation of a prickly pear tree.

This remarkable piece was a collaborative effort by art option students in Grades 10, 11 and 12, each contributing elements such as bark bases, leaves, fruit, the Opuntia flower and various insects.

This project, linked to a school-based assessment, celebrates diversity, with each unique piece reflecting the individuality of the students.

Another beautiful installation can be found nestled among the trees, showcasing the Junior Sector students’ portrayal of tree trunks surrounded by a pond, insects and animals. The piece is a testament to the students’ creativity and will be enjoyed by current and future generations.

The project is supported by Arts Council Malta.
