When it comes to laundry, the washing machine has completely changed the game. Even so, there is a science to sorting out your laundry and keeping your clothes looking new for longer. So here are three tips to follow it if you want the absolutely best results.
#1. Brightness Matters: The most obvious way to separate your clothes is by colour, but this isn’t just a matter of placing all clothes of the same hue family together. Instead, aim to separate clothes by brightness. You can usually wash greys, reds, dark purples, and navy blues together. The same goes for pinks, yellows, light greens, and light blues. Even so, the first time you wash something that’s particularly bright, say a deep red or dark navy, it’s best to wash it on its own as the colour may run and stain your other clothes. For extra protection, use laundry sheets that help to capture loose dye particles.
#2. Amount of Dirt: Most clothes only need to be freshened up and do not require a long cycle in the washing machine to come out clean. However, when you do have items that are soiled or stained, it makes sense to put them on a more heavy-duty cycle that can really agitate the dirt out. In other words, you should separate heavily dirty clothes from ones that just need a run-off-the-mill wash. Moreover, you should always pre-treat stains before washing in order to give the detergent enough time to work.
#3. Always Opt for Inside Out: Although it takes just a few minutes, turning your clothes inside out before putting them in the wash has a surprising number of benefits. This includes helping denim retain its colour and stopping it from getting those annoying white fold lines, as well as keeping any ironed-on graphics on T-shirts vibrant for longer.
