3 cocktails to make the most of Malta’s fig season

1. Fig and thyme gin fizz

This cocktail blends the sweet richness of fresh figs with the herbal notes of thyme and the botanical qualities of gin. To create this drink, start by muddling two fresh figs along with a couple of sprigs of fresh thyme in a cocktail shaker. Once they’re mashed, add 45 ml of gin, 15 ml of fresh lemon juice, and 15 ml of honey or simple syrup to balance the flavours. Fill the shaker with ice and shake well. After shaking, strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Top the drink with a splash of soda water for a fizzy finish. Garnish with a sprig of thyme and a slice of fig for an elegant presentation.

For a warming, autumnal cocktail, this fig and bourbon smash is a perfect choice. Start by muddling two fresh figs in a shaker to release their natural sweetness. To the muddled figs, add 60 ml of bourbon, 15 ml of fresh lemon juice, and 15 ml of maple syrup for a hint of sweetness. To give the drink an extra layer of warmth, add a pinch of cinnamon. Fill the shaker with ice and shake thoroughly to combine all the flavours. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of fig and a cinnamon stick to make it feel extra cosy and seasonal.

3. Non-alcoholic fig and ginger spritz

This non-alcoholic fig and ginger spritz is a refreshing and sophisticated option that highlights the natural sweetness of figs with the zing of ginger. To make it, begin by muddling two fresh figs with 15 ml of fresh lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey or agave syrup to sweeten. Once the figs are thoroughly mashed, add 60 ml of non-alcoholic ginger beer to the glass and stir gently to combine. Top off the drink with a splash of soda water and fill the glass with ice to make it chilled and refreshing. Garnish with a slice of fig and a twist of lemon peel for a touch of elegance.
