Autumn’s biggest hair trend is the micro-bob

Short, angular, and a celebrity-favourite: as the weather gets chillier, the micro-bob is taking over Instagram feeds across the world.

A new season always spells new trends, and autumn 2024’s biggest hair trend is the micro-bob, a shorter version of the iconic haircut that must not go below the chin. Just think 1920s flapper, but with a modern edge…

Spearheaded by celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Lily Allen, and Gigi Hadid, the micro-bob dominated the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet this September, and has made such ripples that everyone from Vogue to The Telegraph has named it the ‘hair trend of the season’.

One of the best parts of this trend is its flexibility. Actress Christine Baranski, known for her role in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!, opted for a sculptural micro-bob full of waves and with lots of volume. Meanwhile, Sarah Paulson, who many will know for her work on American Horror Story, has sported both a wavy mico-bob and combed-back one.

The micro-bob can suit practically every face shape given the right tweaks are done to the cut. As experts have pointed out, some people may benefit from a fringe or bangs, while others may need more or less volume incorporated into their micro-bob. The ideal thing to do is to work directly with your hairstylist to find a cut that suits your face and needs.

It’s also good to note that, while not difficult, taking care of a micro-bob does require you to have some products at home, including a good pair of hair straighteners to keep it looking at its best. Hairspray is also a must, to ensure the look stays all day.
