A new cultural initiative celebrating Malta’s folk heritage through traditional għana singing, storytelling and acoustic guitar performances is kicking off on July 1 at the Sala San Duminku, in Valletta.
Folk Underground aims to show that far from being a relic of the past, għana remains a vibrant and evolving art form while offering a rare opportunity to experience the cultural tradition beyond its usual village and community settings.
Taking part will be renowned folk masters alongside a new generation of musicians, who will perform songs of love, loss, humour, resistance and everyday life. These are Mariele Zammit, Mikiel Cumbo ‘L-iżgej’, George Aquilina ‘Nofsillejl’ and his son Karol, and Andrew Alamango.
The weekly intimate performances will continue throughout summer and autumn. For more information, visit folkunderground.com.
Folk Underground is being held in collaboration with MeDirect Bank Malta, Visit Malta and Magna Żmien.
