5 healthy holiday treats

Dreading all the calorific seasonal snacks? Who said they can’t be healthy?

It’s that time of the year where there’s food everywhere you look. While it may be tempting to eat twenty chocolate bars as you watch Home Alone, we all know we’ll regret it almost as soon as we do it. Why not satisfy that sweet craving with a healthier treat instead? If you’re not sure what I’m on about, here are a few of my favourite examples.

1. Gingerbread Loaf

Gingerbread is a holiday favourite, no doubt there, but it doesn’t need to pile on the sugars and unhealthy carbs. Switch out regular flour for wholewheat, dairy milk for almond, sugar for honey, and you’ve got yourself a healthier version of this classic. Recipe here.

2. Vegan Eggnog

After a holiday cocktail? Eggnog’s the way to go. A few simple changes to the classic recipe can make it healthier and lower on calories. You can even eliminate the rum if you’re not a fan of alcohol. What’s not to love? Recipe here

3. Chocolate Cuties

Chocolate covered strawberries in the summer, chocolate covered orange segments in the winter. The perfect combination for a healthy treat that tastes just like Christmas. Use dark chocolate for an even healthier version. Recipe here.

4. Gluten Free Oatmeal Cookies

This all-time classic variation offers all the sweetness of a regular cookie without the gluten, without the sugar, and without the dairy. You’ve got the goodness of the oats as your flour base and honey as your sugar source. Since it’s mostly allergy-friendly, this recipe is perfect for all the family. Recipe here.

5. Healthy Pecan Pie Bars

Another Christmas classic to end our list of holiday treats, healthy pecan pie bars are paleo, dairy free, gluten free, and grain free. They are lower in carbs and sugar too, which makes them a better choice than a regular pecan pie. Recipe here.
