AP Valletta has won the Architizer A+ 2024 – Public Choice Award in the Best Adaptive Reuse and Renovation Firm category, a major recognition of its overall portfolio of work rather than of a single project.
The awards counted thousands of submissions from around the globe, with entries from over 80 countries. Each project was selected by a distinguished jury of leading architects, including the likes of Carlo Ratti, curator of the upcoming Venice Biennale of Architecture.
For this category, AP rubbed shoulders with another internationally acclaimed firm Neri&Hu, which was chosen as Jury winner.
Home to the largest community of architects online, Architizer’s core mission is to celebrate the world’s best architecture and the people that bring it to life.
The 12th Annual A+Awards are organised by Architizer, one of the most influential architectural awards programmes on the international scene, celebrating best practices in contemporary architecture.
In this edition, Architizer announced an unprecedented number of submissions, with the judges noting that the winners demonstrated a collective commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
‘‘I can see a clear and interesting trend towards re-using, rethinking and re-making. In order to reduce CO2 emissions, this approach is more important than ever, and I’m thrilled to see so many projects moving in that direction this year,” said Monica von Schmalensee, White Arkitekter CEO and A+Awards juror.
AP Valletta said it has been recognised for its contribution to the preservation and rehabilitation of built heritage, which has been creatively reimagined to improve the environmental, social and economic performances of buildings.
By increasing the longevity and efficiency of existing buildings, and reducing the need for demolition and new construction, AP said it was “contributing to spearheading a sustainable approach to architecture, challenging the status quo with regard to the perception and preservation of our heritage”.
AP Valletta’s track record includes the recently restored St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, the Phoenicia Hotel, Four Sappers Residences, the Manoel Theatre and its Priory of Navarre.
Ongoing projects include two major cultural projects in Valletta: the restoration and extension of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Museum and the regeneration of Iċ-Ċentru Malti tak-Ktieb.
Among the firm’s recent award-winning projects are the MASP Awards for the Restoration of St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral and the proposal for the regeneration of Wied is-Sewda Valley in Qormi; the BIG SEE Architecture Awards in Slovenia for Valletta Townhouse; and the Din l-Art Ħelwa prize for architectural heritage – Prix d’Honneur for the restoration of the Manoel Theatre.
Architizer will celebrate the winners of the Architizer A+Awards this Autumn in New York.
