The Malta Society of Arts (MSA) is inviting members and artists to help shape its future direction and identity through two open calls.
The upcoming Members’ Exhibition is scheduled to run from September 17 to October 15, and will centre on themes related to the title Kind | Strange | Beautiful. This title is designed to be open and flexible, inviting a range of possible artistic responses, such as positivity, tenderness, curiosity and beauty, explored through emotional, imaginative and diverse perspectives on life, and expressed using various media.
The application deadline is June 19. Participation is open exclusively to MSA-registered, paid-up members with a valid membership for 2026.
This year’s edition of the Members’ Exhibition will be curated by Charlene Vella, an art historian, curator and associate professor at the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Malta.
“I am delighted to be entrusted with the curation of the Malta Society of Arts Members’ Exhibition 2026. I hope that Kind | Strange | Beautiful will inspire many members to submit their work and encourage other artists to join the MSA and contribute to its vibrant artistic community.”
“This period is bursting with potential”
The MSA has also opened its call for exhibitions to be housed in the Art Galleries over the course of 2027 and 2028. Visual artists and curators have until June 30 to apply for the use of the MSA’s Art Galleries and the chapel, and to form part of the exhibitions’ programme for 2027 and 2028.
Bookings may be for a minimum of three weeks, with exhibitions generally opening on Thursday evenings. Following the applications’ deadline, the Arts Advisory Board chairperson will appoint a selection board from the approved pool of experts to shortlist the applications.
The MSA’s Art Galleries comprise nearly 200 square metres of dedicated exhibition space spread across four connected galleries, with warm parquet floors and beautifully decorated canvas ceilings that merge the modern with the contemporary. They are kitted out with adjustable lighting and hanging equipment.
Joe Borg, president of the MSA, said: “Three years after the last Members’ Exhibition, the MSA looks forward to relaunching the event and reviving a calendar milestone, around an inspiring new cluster of themes.
“This period is bursting with potential; we have also issued our open call for exhibitions, for artists and curators to participate in the MSA’s core activities over the next two years.”
