Cabaret to be staged at Teatru Manoel

Auditions soon open for the Tony Award winning Broadway hit.
Director Lucienne Camilleri and music director Ryan Paul Abela.

The Tony Award winning Broadway hit Cabaret is coming to Malta this Spring and Teatru Manoel is currently looking for artists to take on the roles that bring this musical to life! This new production is produced by Teatru Manoel and directed by Lucienne Camilleri, with musical direction by Ryan Paul Abela.

The 1966 musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff, is based on the 1951 John Van Druten play I Am A Camera which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 semi-autobiographical novel Goodbye Berlin. Set in Berlin during the inter-war period and the twilight of the Jazz age as the Nazis are ascending to power, the musical is set in the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around American writer Clifford Bradshaw’s relations with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles.

Cabaret is one of the most fascinating stage pieces conceived in the 1960s,” says director Lucienne Camilleri. “It remains a show that speaks to our world in a new millennium more now than at any time since it first opened, as evidenced by the smash hit Broadway revival. It’s time to present it again here in Malta!”

The production will have costumes designed by Stefania Grech Vella and musical direction
by Ryan Paul Abela, who adds that “Cabaret is a prolific musical filled with catchy tunes and
touches on relevant subjects that are still being discussed till this day. It’s a fun and enticing
musical that will leave the audience wanting more.”

Teatru Manoel is looking for talented artists who can act, sing and dance. All genderidentities and body types are welcome. Casting will start on September 24. Those interested in auditioning are encouraged to visit www.teatrumanoel.mt for more information and application details. Applications are to be sent by September 18 at noon.
