The winning film among five pictures competing for the LUX Audience Award, organised by the European Parliament, will be crowned on Tuesday, April 29.

Representatives of the competing films, including directors, producers and actors, together with MEPs, members of the public and the media, will convene in Brussels for the awards ceremony.

The nominated movies are the 2023 drama Animal, directed by Sofia Exarchou (Greece, Austria, Romania, Cyprus, Bulgaria; the 2024 documentary film Dahomey, directed by Mati Diop (France, Senegal, Benin); the 2024 animated film Flow, directed by Gints Zibalodis (Latvia, France, Belgium); the 2024 documentary Intercepted, directed by Oksana Karpovych (Canada, France, Ukraine); and the 2024 drama Julie Keeps Quiet, directed by Leonardo van Dijl (Belgium, Sweden).

The winner is selected jointly by MEPs and members of the public, on the basis of one- to five-star ratings, with the two groups’ rating weighted evenly.

The films have been showing across Europe in March and April. Locally, they are being screened at Spazju Kreattiv, in Valletta, and at the Citadel Cinema in Victoria.

Members of the public and MEPs can vote for the winner on the basis of one- to five-star ratings, with the two groups’ rating weighted evenly. The deadline for rating the films is Sunday.

Flow showing on Saturday

The last screening in Malta and Gozo is being held tomorrow, Saturday.

Flow follows a courageous, solitary cat as it witnesses what seems to be the end of the world. Its home is suddenly devastated by a great flood and he finds refuge on a boat populated by various species, including a lemur, capybara and a dog. Despite their differences, these animals must team up to navigate the challenges and dangers that lie ahead.
